Initial proof of concept after the drafting phase was completed:
As with the rest of this area of the layout, the 3/4" plywood bench work is covered by 5/8" high density foam board. This long section has a 2% grade downward as viewed from the top of the picture to the bottom.
We now have a very, very long siding if needed for passenger trains (about 27ft in length):
